Finding a parking space on the street in South Beach can sometimes feel like an exercise in madness. Fortunately for Miamians, there’s the Lincoln Road Garage, a bold and daring feat of architecture, which offers not only refuge for your car, but places to shop, dine, catch a view of both the city and the ocean, and even live.

Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the same team that conceived the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and Miami’s own Perez Art Museum, designed the mixed-use masterpiece that sits on the western end of Lincoln Road Mall. From bottom to top, crooked concrete columns and wedges support the versatile structure, giving it the resemblance of a post-modern house of cards. There are no exterior walls and no two floors are the same. Ramp steepness varies from gentle to sharp, accommodating the range of heights the garage offers per floor. A staircase spirals through the middle of the light-flooded building.
